Penn State Schuylkill Competes Against NCAA Division II Kutztown in Road Test
Makhi Jones leads Schuylkill with 16 points.
Penn State Schuylkill faced a challenge on Saturday, taking on NCAA Division II opponent Kutztown University at Keystone Arena. Despite a hard-fought effort, the Lions fell 104-73, moving to 1-4 on the season. This marked Schuylkill's second consecutive matchup against a Division II opponent, following their win against Mansfield earlier in the week.
Makhi Jones continued his stellar play, leading Schuylkill with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals, showcasing his ability to compete at a high level. Devin Adams provided a spark off the bench, adding 16 points, including two three-pointers. Issac Lane contributed 15 points and 6 rebounds, while Antwuan Byrd chipped in 10 points.
The Lions battled early, trading leads with Kutztown and keeping the game close in the first half, highlighted by Jones' sharp shooting and defensive prowess. Schuylkill trailed by just 11 at halftime, 40-29, but Kutztown's depth and inside presence proved difficult to contain in the second half.
Kutztown's Jordan Nkoa Abessolo posted an impressive double-double with 18 points and 18 rebounds, and Jalen Bryant led all scorers with 24 points. Schuylkill's defense forced turnovers and created opportunities in transition, but the size and efficiency of their Division II opponent ultimately made the difference.
Despite the result, this game offered valuable experience against top competition as the Lions prepare for PSUAC play. They'll look to build on these performances and turn the lessons learned into success as they open conference play this Tuesday at 8 p.m. on the road against Penn State Scranton.
