Lions win ECAC Matchup Over Centenary, Drop to Immaculata in Atlantic East Action
Abree Brown threw for five touchdowns and Penn State Schuylkill split Tuesday’s tri-match, defeating Centenary before falling to Immaculata.
Penn State Schuylkill opened the day with an exciting 33-27 win over Centenary, using big-play offense and timely defensive stops to pick up the victory. In the second game, the Lions ran into a tough Immaculata squad and dropped a 33-6 decision. Schuylkill will get another shot at both teams on Thursday night when the Lions host a rematch tri-match at Blue Mountain High School beginning at 6 p.m.
Game 1 – Penn State Schuylkill 33, Centenary 27
The Lions struck for 33 points in a back-and-forth battle with Centenary, led by a huge day through the air from Abree Brown, who finished 13-for-24 for 240 yards and four passing touchdowns. Mikayla Johnson was Brown's top target, hauling in six catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns, while Miranda Morstatt added three receptions for 40 yards and a score. Kay Lee Morgan also caught a touchdown pass and added 23 rushing yards.
After Centenary took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter, Schuylkill answered with a 66-yard touchdown strike from Brown to Johnson to tie the game. Later in the quarter, Morstatt came up with a key interception, setting up Brown's fourth-down touchdown pass to Morstatt with 49 seconds left before halftime. The Lions then created even more separation in the third quarter, highlighted by another defensive touchdown and a 75-yard interception return score from Morstatt.
Defensively, Morstatt made her mark all over the field with five tackles and two interceptions for 71 return yards and a touchdown, while Makayla Hill totaled seven tackles. Avagale Jones added five tackles and a sack, helping the Lions come up with the stops they needed late.
Game 2 – Immaculata 33, Penn State Schuylkill 6
In the second game of the day, Schuylkill was unable to find the same rhythm offensively against Immaculata. The Lions finished with 148 yards of total offense, with Brown throwing for 112 yards and a touchdown. Miranda Morstatt caught five passes for 26 yards and the team's lone score, while Mikayla Johnson added 45 receiving yards and Kenzie Staller chipped in 30 yards on two catches.
Immaculata built control early and used an efficient passing attack to stay in front throughout the contest. Schuylkill's best offensive drive came in the third quarter, when Brown connected with Morstatt and Johnson on chunk plays before the Lions broke through for their only touchdown.
On defense, Sierra Wishnefsky led the Lions with eight tackles, while Morstatt and Makayla Hill each recorded four tackles. Seham Bukhari added three stops in the loss.
