Rebounding and defense power Schuylkill past Scranton, 43–38
In a grind-it-out conference road game, Penn State Schuylkill leaned on toughness, second chances, and late defensive stops to secure the win.
It wasn't pretty, but it was powerful. Penn State Schuylkill earned a hard-nosed 43–38 road victory over Penn State Scranton Saturday afternoon in a game defined by physical defense, rebounding dominance, and timely hustle plays.
Both teams struggled to find early rhythm offensively, ending the first quarter tied 6–6. Schuylkill's defense immediately set the tone, contesting every touch and forcing Scranton into difficult perimeter shots. The hosts finished just 3-for-25 from three-point range, a credit to the Lions' closeouts and help-side rotations.
The second quarter followed the same defensive script. While shots were hard to come by, Schuylkill began to create separation on the glass. Offensive rebounds turned empty possessions into extra chances, and midway through the period Katelyn Otto converted inside to tie the game at 13–13. Moments later, Madison Cooper knocked down a clutch three-pointer late in the half to give Schuylkill a 16–13 edge heading into the break.
Scranton made its strongest push in the third quarter, briefly grabbing momentum behind a three from Autumn Koch to take an 18–16 lead. Schuylkill responded with poise. Megan Hauser finished inside to tie it, Mikayla Johnson added a mid-range jumper, and Ava Novak provided a spark off the bench with key buckets around the rim. The Lions closed the quarter on a late surge, capped by a buzzer-beating three from Johnson, to carry a 31–26 advantage into the fourth.
With the game tightening in the final period, Schuylkill's composure showed. Novak scored twice inside during a crucial stretch to extend the lead to 36–28, and the Lions continued to dominate the boards on both ends. Scranton made one final run, trimming the deficit to three in the closing minutes, but Schuylkill answered at the free-throw line and came up with key defensive rebounds to shut the door.
Schuylkill finished with a commanding 54–38 rebounding advantage, including 16 offensive rebounds, which proved to be the difference in a game where both teams shot under 26 percent from the field. The Lions also recorded 9 steals and 3 blocks, consistently turning defensive effort into extra possessions.
