Now entering his second season as head coach of the Penn State Schuylkill men's soccer team, Dr. Luke Redmond continues to build a program centered on teamwork, accountability, and student success. While many on campus know him as a dedicated biology professor, Redmond has been part of the Penn State Schuylkill community since 2015, earned tenure in 2022, and now serves in a dual role as educator and coach.

Redmond's coaching journey spans more than a decade.

"I've been coaching soccer for about 10 years. I was in the gym one day practicing by myself, and Bryan Valentine saw me and mentioned there was an opening. He said I should apply, so I did."

In addition to coaching, Redmond continues to play in an adult men's soccer league, giving him firsthand insight into the game and allowing him to bring both playing experience and coaching knowledge to his student-athletes.

His philosophy extends far beyond wins and losses.

"My goal is to put together a team, not just a group of players, that finds success on the field and does well in the classroom."

With more than 20 years in higher education, Redmond understands that college athletics are about much more than competition. From day one, he has emphasized three priorities: academics, team, and soccer.

"I want my players to do well in the classroom because that will be more important for them in terms of whatever career they are trying to get into."

When evaluating student-athletes, Redmond looks beyond technical ability.

"I hope student-athletes take away the importance of hard work, setting goals, and maintaining a balance between athletics and academics."

One of his favorite coaching memories came during a tournament with another team he has coached since 2020. After falling behind 2-0 early in the opening match, the team battled back to earn a draw before ultimately winning the tournament.

"That memory stands out because of the resilience the team showed. I was so proud of them."

Redmond's own path into higher education was shaped by a mentor while attending the University of Michigan-Flint, where he earned his degree in biology. He credits Dr. Gary Pace with inspiring him to pursue a career in science and education.

"If I hadn't met him, I would be doing something entirely different today. My life would look very different. I definitely would not be here at Penn State Schuylkill."

Outside the classroom and soccer field, Redmond enjoys spending time outdoors, especially fishing.

"Fishing is probably my favorite hobby. I even have a YouTube channel where I share some of my fishing trips."

As he enters another season leading the Nittany Lions, Redmond remains focused on continuing to build the program while helping student-athletes grow both on and off the field.

"There will be challenges, but we will face them together and grow as a team."
