The Penn State Schuylkill Golf team has a lot going for them this season with their mix of great returning players as well as a few newcomers, including Schuylkill's very first female player. The players from last year are Joshua Zelinsky, Vito Valenti, James Swantek, and William Hoynoski. Kathryn McCarthy, Bernard Guzick, and James Dietz are this year's new players.
Coach Powis commends some of the players based off of their performance so far in his statement, "Dietz shot scores of 75-76 in his first two collegiate golf matches and should compete with Zelinsky for medalist honors in upcoming tournaments. Guzick looks to contribute to the team score in the near future and has carded solid scores of 87-93 in his first two collegiate matches. McCarthy has already made her presence known by winning our home golf event with a score of 89, beating out 4 other females."
Thus far, they have already competed in two invitationals where they did very well, finishing in 3rd place at University Park's White Course and 4th place during PSU Schuylkill Invitational. They still have a few invitationals left to go this season: Ursinus Invitational, the PSUAC Invitational at University Park's Blue Course, and the Hazelton Invitational.
Coach Powis is prepared to make Penn State Schuylkill proud this season, saying "I am looking forward to the continued improvement of our team as we move through the season. There are some very good players in our league this year. That being said, I do not believe we have played our best golf just yet so it should make for an exciting finish."
