Gray Hits 1,000 as Lions Roll Past Scranton on Senior Night
Gray’s 1,000th point capped a dominant Senior Night win for the Lions.
Amir Gray became the latest Lion to etch his name in the record book, scoring his 1,000th career point on his final layup as Penn State Schuylkill celebrated Senior Night with a 92-69 win over Penn State Scranton Monday evening in Schuylkill Haven.
Penn State Schuylkill (8-16, 5-10) came out sharp on both ends, using pace, pressure, and efficient offense to jump in front early. After a quick 2-0 Scranton start, the Lions answered behind Issac Lane's first bucket (18:15) and a three from Lee Newton off an Amir Gray assist (16:59). Gray found his rhythm early—knocking down a three (14:55) and then another deep ball (12:32) as Schuylkill began to stretch the lead.
Bryce Hensley set the tone as a finisher and disruptor, stacking buckets at the rim while also making plays defensively. In a span of just over two minutes, Hensley scored on back-to-back possessions (11:22, 10:57) as the Lions pushed the margin into double figures. Scranton tried to answer through Elijah Bryant, but Schuylkill's defense kept producing stops and turnovers—Devin Adams Jr. picked Bryant for a steal (13:59) and Hensley added multiple deflections/steals to keep the Lions running.
The Lions' ball movement and balance showed throughout the half. Newton splashed another three (5:27) and Gray continued to attack gaps and create, finishing the half with a late flurry that included a pull-up jumper (4:55). With Hensley drilling a three just before the buzzer (0:37), Schuylkill closed the opening 20 minutes with momentum and took a 44-31 advantage into the break.
Any thought of a Scranton run was met immediately after halftime. A technical on Scranton to open the second half gave Gray free throws (20:00), and the Lions turned defense into offense in a hurry—Hensley scored in transition (19:05) and followed with another bucket and a free throw (19:04). Schuylkill's pressure forced repeated mistakes, and the Lions cashed in: Hensley finished again (18:53) and the lead swelled as the Lions controlled tempo.
Scranton continued to battle, led by Bryant's scoring and activity, but Schuylkill's response was consistent—answer baskets, stops, and points at the stripe. Lane scored off a Devin Adams assist (15:42), Newton added a finish (13:14), and Hensley repeatedly punished mismatches in the lane while also protecting the rim. Gray punctuated a key stretch with a powerful dunk (9:06) and kept piling up points by living at the line, finishing a perfect 12-for-12 night on free throws.
The Lions' lead hovered comfortably in the 20s late, and the Senior Night moments arrived in the closing minutes. Joele Johnson brought energy off the bench with a block (0:31) and then capped the scoring with a late bucket (0:24). Fittingly, it was Gray's final layup that delivered the milestone—his 1,000th career point—putting an exclamation point on a night that celebrated seniors Amir Gray, Devin Adams Jr., Bryce Hensley, and Lee Newton.
