Lane’s 20 and Newton’s 18 can’t finish it off in 105–100 shootout at Scranton
Schuylkill exploded for 57 first-half points, but a red-hot Scranton second half—and a pivotal late sequence—swung a tight one in the final minute.
Penn State Schuylkill nearly stole a high-octane road win Saturday afternoon, but Penn State Scranton surged after halftime to escape with a 105–100 victory (Jan. 31) in Scranton.
Schuylkill came out sharp and aggressive, putting up 57 points in the opening 20 minutes while shooting efficiently and attacking the paint. Lee Newton was a constant presence inside early, finishing possessions with strong rebounds and put-backs, while Issac Lane provided scoring punch and playmaking as the Lions built a 57–47 halftime lead.
The second half turned into a track meet—and Scranton caught fire from deep. After hitting 14 threes on the day, the Royals' perimeter barrage fueled a 58-point second half and steadily erased the deficit. Fhenyx Scutt (31 points) and Elijah Bryant (27) repeatedly answered every Schuylkill push, and Scranton's pressure created just enough extra possessions to flip momentum.
Even as the lead changed hands late, Schuylkill kept finding answers. Down the stretch, Lane finished through contact and got to the line, and Newton continued to make winning plays around the rim, including a tip-in that gave Schuylkill a brief late edge. The game tightened into a one-possession battle inside the final three minutes with both teams trading scores.
The decisive moments came in the final 1:40:
With Scranton up 99–96, a technical foul assessed to Hadir Boswell at 1:38 led to two made free throws, turning a one-possession game into a larger uphill climb.
Schuylkill fought back—Amir Gray hit two free throws, and Dekari Harrell scored inside to cut it to 103–100 with 30 seconds left—but Scranton secured the rebound and iced it at the line to close.
