SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. – Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball defeated PSUAC opponent Penn State Scranton on Saturday.
An early 7-2 lead by Schuylkill prompted a timeout from Scranton with 16:38 left in the half. Another surge from Schuylkill extended their lead to nine points around the midway point of the half. Scranton narrowed their deficit to 16-14, but a three-pointer by Makhi Jones (Harrisburg, PA / Susquehanna Township High School) made it a two-possession game with 10:04 remaining. Schuylkill maintained a lead of up to nine points for the rest of the half and carried it into the second half.
A basket by Dashawn Dixon (Baltimore, MD / Catonsville High School) at the start of the second half increased Schuylkill's lead to double digits. Scranton then went on a run, taking a one-point lead into their timeout with 14:16 remaining in regulation. Trailing 56-50, Devin Adams (Baltimore, MD / Kenwood High School) scored four consecutive points for Schuylkill, making it a two-point game. A steal and score by Antwuan Byrd (Harrisburg, PA / Bishop McDevitt High School) tied the game at 56 with 10:33 to play. Schuylkill reclaimed the lead with 6:58 remaining after Adams made a three-pointer.
With Scranton ahead 68-67 with 2:53 to play, Dixon converted a layup, putting Schuylkill in control. Another bucket by Dixon on the next possession made it a three-point game.
After a turnover by Scranton, Jones was fouled and made both free throws, extending Schuylkill's lead to five points with a minute left. A three-pointer by Scranton cut the lead to two points with seconds remaining. Hadir Boswell (Philadelphia, PA / West Philadelphia Catholic High School) was fouled with 13 seconds left and made a free throw for Schuylkill, ultimately securing the win with a defensive stop.
Jones recorded 12 points and 5 assists. Also scoring 12 points was Adams. Dixon tallied 10 points while Byrd finished with 11 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals.
Schuylkill (11-14 overall, 8-7 PSUAC) will host Penn State Brandywine Tuesday, February 13th at 8:00 p.m.
