Beyond the Jersey: Elevating the Game
Antwuan Byrd Jr. is a fourth-year psychology major from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He has made a lasting impact both on and off the basketball court at Penn State Schuylkill, earning recognition for his leadership, discipline, and commitment to growth while balancing academics and athletics.
Antwuan Byrd Jr., known to most as AB or Twuan, started playing basketball when he was just six years old at his local YMCA in Harrisburg. What began as a way to stay active and have fun quickly turned into a passion that has shaped his journey as both an athlete and a student. After beginning his college career at Penn State York, Antwuan transferred to Penn State Schuylkill following his freshman year, where he found the opportunity to grow both academically and athletically. "It was a great fit to expand my knowledge, and Coach Williams played a big part in that decision," Antwuan said.
Since joining the Schuylkill campus, AB has steadily made a name for himself on the court. With an increase in playing time and responsibility, he's averaged 9.5 points per game over his three seasons, starting in 84 out of 92 games. His sophomore year saw him put up 8.0 points per game, followed by a career-best 11.0 points in his junior year and 9.5 in his senior season. He's earned accolades such as USCAA All-American, two-time Second Team All-Conference, 2024-25 Penn State Schuylkill Men's Basketball MVP, and was part of the 2021–2022 conference championship team. These accomplishments are the result of hard work, focus, and a deep understanding of the game.
For Antwuan, basketball has always been more than a sport. It's been a teacher. "My biggest challenge has prepared me for life by teaching me how to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities each day," he said. "I strive to stay focused and make the most of every opportunity, never taking anything for granted." That mindset extends beyond the court, as AB balances academics, athletics, and personal life through discipline and routine. "By recognizing my wants and needs, I ensure that I stay focused and productive," he shared.
Off the court, Antwuan's aspirations reflect a deep desire to help others. He plans to become a psychologist and eventually start a foundation to support cures for mental disorders. His drive to make a difference is matched only by his humility and gratitude. "Take your losses like your wins, never think you're bigger than the moment," he reflected when asked about the lessons he's learned as a student-athlete.
Looking back on his time at Penn State Schuylkill, AB credits much of his success to those who supported him. "Coach Williams put faith and quality time on and off the court with the team. That explains the success of the year." With his journey as a collegiate athlete coming to a close, Antwuan Byrd Jr. leaves behind a legacy of hard work, leadership, and resilience that extends far beyond the jersey.
