Beyond the Jersey: No Goal Too Big
Kay Lee Morgan, a first-year biology major from Hegins, PA, has quickly become a standout goalkeeper for Penn State Schuylkill while also stepping up as a leader on the new flag football team.
Kay Lee Morgan's journey as a student-athlete at Penn State Schuylkill began years ago on a soccer field in the fourth grade, when she and a friend decided to try something new. That simple decision sparked a passion that has grown ever since. "I ended up falling in love with the sport," Kay Lee said. "It felt amazing to push myself to be better with every practice and game we had." Now a proud member of the PSU Schuylkill women's soccer team, Kay Lee has not only become an important presence on the field as a goalkeeper but has also earned recognition through the prestigious John Fritz Sportsmanship Award.
Choosing Penn State Schuylkill was about more than just athletics. "I felt comfortable at the campus and I liked that I could commute without being too far from home," she shared. That sense of comfort has grown into a deep appreciation for the athletics community that surrounds her. "Everyone involved with PSU Schuylkill athletics are always so motivational, and they are willing to help you with any issues you may have in your journey as a student-athlete."
Kay Lee's transition from swimming to focusing solely on soccer was influenced by practicality and passion. "Unfortunately PSU Schuylkill didn't have a pool, if it did I would most definitely be swimming for our school," she explained. "I believe my connection with soccer is just something I didn't have with swim, practices were more fun and I felt more at home on the field compared to the pool." Her background in swimming, however, continues to influence her mindset and work ethic. "Swimming is such a mentally difficult sport and it taught me to keep going, even when you feel tired. If you don't keep swimming, you will sink."
Balancing academics, athletics, and personal life is no small feat, but Kay Lee has developed a rhythm over time. "I have been doing this since high school, it is hard to get used to but I think of it like soccer is a good reason to try harder in school," she said. "It is extra motivation and having a sport to go to after classes is an amazing stress reliever. I also try to work at home on the weekends for extra money. It may seem like a handful but you should try to surround yourself with people who will support you every step of the way."
Grateful for the support she's received, Kay Lee offered a heartfelt thank you to the people who have helped her along the way. "Thank you Coach Kay Lee for giving me a chance as goalie, I've never been so grateful to be such a big part of the team. Thank you trainers Kate and Maysen for all of the pep talks and helping me when I got a concussion. I'm so thankful for a pair of great people like you."
Soccer has already begun shaping her future, helping her develop key life skills she plans to carry into her career. "It will help me practice teamwork, communication, leadership, and most importantly time management." Her leadership continues to grow off the soccer field as well, where she has recently joined the flag football team, helping to lead the way in the new sport at Penn State Schuylkill. For Kay Lee Morgan, being a student-athlete is more than just a title, it's a way of life filled with passion, perseverance, and purpose.
