Keira Devor, a second-year student from Lewisberry, PA, is more than just a student-athlete at Penn State Schuylkill. As a Criminal Justice major with a minor in Communication Arts and Sciences (CAS), Keira embodies the resilience, determination, and heart that student-athletes bring to their academic and athletic pursuits. Her journey—both on and off the field—is a testament to the power of community, perseverance, and growth.
Keira's athletic journey began when she was just four years old. While her original passion was gymnastics, a fateful t-ball session led her to discover her true love for softball. Encouraged by her grandfather, who had a deep connection to the game, Keira's family roots in baseball and softball cemented her place on the field. "After my first practice, I never wanted to touch a gymnastics mat again," Keira recalls. It was a decision that not only shaped her childhood but also laid the foundation for a future where sports and academics could coexist.
Keira's path to success hasn't been without challenges. During her junior year of high school, she faced the loss of her grandfather to dementia while recovering from an injury that required physical therapy. Despite these hardships, she was able to find the strength to continue pursuing her athletic dreams, guided by the values her grandfather instilled in her. "He was the one who introduced me to the sport and pushed me to become a better athlete," she shares. Keira's experience has taught her that mental and physical health are inseparable, and taking care of both is essential for success. "While your body is managing pain and rehabilitation, so is your mind," she explains. Reaching out for support, whether physically or mentally, has been crucial in overcoming these obstacles and continuing her journey as both an athlete and a student.
Keira's college experience has been marked by impressive academic and athletic achievements. She has earned a spot on the PSUAC All-Academic Team, been named to the Dean's List for three consecutive semesters, and received the reputable USCAA National All-Academic recognition. These honors reflect her dedication to her studies and her commitment to maintaining excellence on the field. While she's still exploring different career paths in criminal justice, Keira's ultimate goal is to become a college professor, demonstrating her desire to give back to the academic community that has supported her.
Keira chose Penn State Schuylkill because of its small, tight-knit campus environment. "The small campus drew me in from the start," she says. "I wanted a campus where I would be able to develop relationships with professors, feel comfortable navigating, and one where I would be able to continue to play the sport I've loved my entire life." This connection to the faculty and her sport was essential in making Penn State Schuylkill the perfect fit for her.
Finding balance as a student-athlete is no easy feat, but Keira has honed strategies that allow her to manage the competing demands of academics, athletics, and personal time. "Finding a balance between all three can be very difficult, and it takes a lot of trial and error to find what really works for you," she explains. She's learned that productivity often thrives in the library or late at night and makes sure to carve out time for herself after practice. The close-knit community at Penn State Schuylkill also plays a significant role in her success. "We have a small campus, so take advantage of your professors knowing who you are," Keira advises.
Keira emphasizes the importance of mental health in a student-athlete's journey. She has worked hard to prioritize her mental well-being, regularly attending psychiatric appointments and finding healthy ways to cope with the stresses of her academic and athletic commitments. "Everyone needs a little help sometimes and there is absolutely no shame in reaching out when it is needed," she says. She also knows when to step back and take a break. "When your mind is tired, so is your body," she reflects. By listening to her body and mind, Keira has found a way to maintain her overall health while staying on top of her responsibilities.
Keira's relationship with the athletic department and her teammates has been instrumental in her success. "Our small campus has allowed me to develop relationships with the athletic staff," she says. "Trainer Maysen and Kate create a welcoming environment in the trainers' room for student-athletes, and I always feel acknowledged when I come down." These relationships are vital, providing a sense of community and support that makes navigating the challenges of being a student-athlete a little easier.
Keira's journey is one of perseverance, passion, and a deep commitment to both her academic and athletic endeavors. As she continues to explore the many possibilities within the criminal justice field, one thing is certain: her love for the sport, her drive for success, and her dedication to personal growth will propel her forward, no matter where the journey takes her. Keira's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of balance, community, and self-care on the road to success. As she continues to thrive at Penn State Schuylkill, there's no doubt she will inspire others to do the same.
